What is Scottish country dancing?

Scottish country dancing is a joyful, sociable activity that is not only helps you keep fit, but gives your brain a bit of a workout too! It’s a fun (and very reasonably priced) evening out, and the great thing is that you can come on your own and feel totally comfortable. We tend to to dance with a different partner for each dance, and so it’s all very friendly and you will get to know lots of new people.

Couples are in a ‘set’, of generally between 3 to 5 couples, and dance a sequence of figures that form the pattern for each dance. During the evening, people take part in lots of different dances and once you know the basic figures, you will build up a kind of ‘shorthand’ to help you do any dance without much difficulty. And the music is wonderful.

What it’s not!

Sometimes, people get muddled between Scottish country dancing and Highland Dancing – this is the dancing between swords, which is generally done in competition. Scottish country dancing is a flowing form of dance, with several other people, much like English country dancing, and is collaborative, rather than competitive. All you need is a pair of comfortable shoes, no kilt required! (although a lot of men do choose to wear kilts for social dances, but it’s not essential)
